Find Out If You Can Clean Prior to “Move-In Day”

This is the best way to go when possible. If you rent a place that claims it will be clean and “move-in” ready but it doesn’t cut the mustard, try calling your new landlord or the previous homeowner. They may send a crew over to clean it for you. However, in most cases, they probably won’t.. Here’s how you can create a plan of attack and clean your place yourself.

Create a Playlist to Keep Cleaning Day Delightful

Cue up your best beats or try something new. Instead of your favorite tunes, try listening to Binaural beats in the alpha frequencies (8 to 13 Hz). Believe it or not, they are known to are thought to encourage relaxation, promote positivity, and decrease anxiety. We have a few playlists available on Spotify.

Clean and Sanitize High-Touch Surfaces

You may not need a reminder after the past few years we have had, but here’s one anyway. Use a wipe to clean your new doorknobs or door handles, light switches, and toilets. Also, don’t forget to wipe down your phones, tablets, floors, remote controls, keyboards, and other such items when you can.

Go High, Then Low

Start at the top item in each room and work your way down. Ceiling fans, overhead lights, and other items close to the ceiling can get greasy and grimy, and they tend to throw dust all over when cleaned. Some pro cleaners suggest you use an old pillowcase to clean the fan blades. All you need to do is slip the case over the blade and wipe away from the center using the inside of the pillowcase’s top layer. The dust will get collected in the case, which you can wash when finished.

Make Your Fridge Food Friendly

Here’s how you can quickly make your new fridge sparkle. First, you should take out all the shelving, drawers, and any other removable parts. Then wash these parts with hot, soapy water and dry them with a clean, lint-free towel.

To avoid cracking any removable glass shelves, let them come to room temperature before you wash them.

Next, wipe the inside of the empty refrigerator with warm water and soap then wipe it all with clean water to rinse off the soap. Use a solution of 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach in 1 gallon of water as a final step to sanitize.

PRO TIP: Use Lemon Juice on Stainless Steel.

Did you know you can use lemon to make your stainless-steel sparkle? Rub a lemon on the inside of your stainless-steel sink to make it shine and smell fresh. You can also soak your cleaning cloth with fresh lemon juice, then scrub your stainless-steel appliances with the cloth, and it will shine “like the top of the Chrysler building.”

Make Your Bathroom Beautiful

You will want to start at the top of the space and move down as we mentioned above. Use a general-purpose cleaner with bleach to wipe down walls and windows, switch to a glass cleaner to tackle any mirrored surfaces. Next, wipe down your cabinets and linen closets if applicable. Your fresh, clean towels will love you for it.

Power Through Your Shower

When it comes to scrubbing a tub and shower, sustainable cleaning experts suggest you mix some vinegar with a small amount of water in a spray bottle and give your bath and sink a spray. Then, wait about 20 minutes and rinse.

PRO TIP: Never Clean Marble with Vinegar

The acidity of vinegar may damage marble, or granite floors, showers, and countertops. Baking soda can be used as a mild abrasive to clean and freshen many bathroom surfaces. Add some baking soda to a moldy or musty surface to cause friction as you scrub, then spray with the vinegar (this will fizz as it cleans) and rinse with warm water. You can also choose a bleach-based scrub to remove mold or build-up.

Create a Throne Fit for Royalty

Be sure to replace your toilet seat at your new home. It’s best to scrub the toilet before you replace the seat. Toilet bowl cleaner and a good scrubber make easy work of this tedious endeavor.

Finally, the Floors.

Do your floors as the final task in every room. Many sustainability experts recommend you use reusable washable microfiber pads to mop. They are great for capturing germs and small dust and particles but don’t add toxic fumes to your home. Check this alternative for the Swiffer.

Finish up the bathroom and powder room with a quick mop, and you will be smiling when you go to unpack your toiletries and make this new place yours.

Speaking of Floors: Protect Them When You Move

If you are moving on your own, lay down mats or boxes to protect the floors so wood or tile floors stay beautiful. Protect the corners and walls of your new home from scuffs by wrapping your items in heavy blankets. If you really want to make sure your move goes easily, hire a pro.
